Since the Wando Bridge was closed last Monday for emergency repairs, we got to thinking about how scary bridges are. We've compiled a list of the scariest bridges in the United States to get your mind off our own bridges here in the Lowcountry.
These bridges might just make your palms sweat!
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland is so scary there is a service that will drive you across the bridge in your own car. The bridge reaches up to 200 feet in some places and is over 4 miles long. There are no shoulders on either sides and the barriers are so low you can see the bay below.
Royal Gorge Bridge
The Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado is nearly 1000 feet up from the canyon floor. If the height of the bridge doesn't scare you off, the is always threatened by wildfires. A wildfire closed the bridge in 2013 which jumped the canyon and burned much of the park decking on both sides. Luckily the bridge was only minimally damaged.

Mackinac Bridge
The suspension bridge that connects the upper part of Michigan to the lower peninsula. The bridge is narrow with no dividers between you and oncoming traffic. During a blizzard, the stretch of bridge becomes to much for some drivers and law enforcement offers to drive terrified motorists over.
Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York is the world's longest suspension bridge. It's a massive span that stretches 2 and a half miles across and stands 228 feet above the river below.
Due to it's size, the double-decker bridge overwhelms people that need to cross.
Seven Mile Bridge
The Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys may not just scare people that hate bridges but also people that are afraid of water. The bridge sits just 65 feet above the water and for miles all you see is the ocean.
