Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was cited for careless driving and failing to wear his seat belt during the traffic stop that led to his detainment prior to his team's Week 1 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday (September 8), TMZ Sports.
"High rate [of] speed visual estimation 60 MPH, no seat belt. High [traffic] of pedestrians and [vehicles]," an officer noted on the careless driving ticket.
The citations, which don't require Hill to appear in court, carry a total fine of $208 if he pleads or is found guilty. Video footage of Hill's detainment was shared ESPN's Jeff Darlington, shows Hill being pulled out of the car and forced on the ground by multiple officers.
Hill appears to be on the phone with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, while being pulled out of his vehicle.
Additional footage shared by Darlington shows teammate Calais Campbell being handcuffed and told he's being placed under arrest, as well as another clip in which Hill pleads with teammate Jonnu Smith to stay at the scene as officers demand to see his driver's license.
Hill was pulled over while driving to Hard Rock Stadium Sunday morning. A video shared by ESPN's Adam Schefter showed Hill placed in handcuffs and laying on the ground about a block away from the stadium from a bystander's perspective.
One of the officers who detained Hill was been placed on administrative leave amid an ongoing internal investigation, Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels confirmed in a statement shared on the department's X account Sunday afternoon.
"Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter," Daniels said. "One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted.
"I'm committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers."
Daniels had previously issued a statement in response to the incident on behalf of the department.
"We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers. I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available," Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels said in a statement shared by the department.
Hill finished Sunday's game with seven receptions for 130 yards, which included an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter to cut the Dolphins' deficit to 17-14 before two unanswered field goals. The All-Pro wide receiver Hill recently agreed to a three-year, $90 million contract with the Dolphins, which included a $7 million signing bonus and 459 million guaranteed.
Hill led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and was the co-leader for receiving touchdowns with 13 in 2023.
