Charlie Puth was channeling a legendary singer when he took center stage for his rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to kick off Super Bowl LX.

The "Changes" singer wowed the crowd and viewers at home with a performance of his take on the national anthem at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday (February 8). After his time in the spotlight, he took to X to explain that his arrangement of the patriotic tune was inspired by Whitney Houston, per E! News. The "I Will Always Love You" hitmaker made her mark on Super Bowl history with her own "The Star-Spangled Banner" performance at Super Bowl XXV in 1991.

"Thank you everyone for your kind words. It was an honor to sing The National Anthem," he said. "I wrote the arrangement in a very specific way to honor Whitney Houston – I hope that was heard."

Puth also thanked all of the musicians, artists and choirs who contributed to the performance, sharing how the collaboration reinforced his love for music.

"Thank you to the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the Sainted Choir, the Color of Noize Orchestra, Steve Hackman, and Kenny G for joining me on stage," he said. "And thank you to Adam Blackstone for writing such a beautiful choir part. I love music so much."

The "Light Switch" musician is carrying his love of music into his new album Whatever's Clever!, out March 27, and upcoming tour. He recently shared how he is trying to find the balance between music and his family, especially in regards to touring, as he and wife Brooke Sansone prepare for the birth of their first child.
