Eric Dane's cause of death has been confirmed more than one week after he passed away at 53.

According to a death certificate obtained by People, the Grey's Anatomy alum died of respiratory failure, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) list as an underlying cause of death. The Euphoria actor died February 19, 10 months after he first revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually leading to a loss of muscle control, per the ALS Association.

Dane is survived by his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. His family confirmed in a statement that he had passed away following his "courageous battle" with the disease, which he first shared publicly in April 2025.

"He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," the statement read. "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.

The statement continued, "He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."

Dane was known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, portraying the beloved McSteamy for several seasons on the long-running medical drama. On February 26, one week after his death, Grey's Anatomy honored his time on the show with a touching tribute to Dane and the character he brought to life on screen.
