Denise Jonas is reflecting a recent health scare.
Denise, mother of the Jonas Brothers — Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas — as well as Franklin Jonas, is set to appear on the Got It From My Momma podcast. In a preview of the episode shared by Us Weekly, she opened up about her experience having a basal ganglia stroke.
"It was in the basal ganglia area of my brain, which affected my cognitive thinking, and my speech, reasoning," she said. "At certain times I would have difficulty with my speech."
While she didn't reveal when exactly she had the medical episode, she detailed some of the lingering effects she has been experiencing ever since.
"If I'm tired or hungry, I can fumble my words around and not think of the right words," she said. "Sometimes, I said earlier, I can't remember if it's this or that because I really can't."
Denise also shared that she was experiencing "prior symptoms" before her diagnosis that she "didn't realize" were indicators, per E! News.
"The symptoms that I had were that my blood pressure had been high," she said. "I had gone to three different doctors over the course of six months prior. I had gone to my dentist where they took my blood pressure, I'd been to the gynecologist where they took my blood pressure. And I woke up feeling like my arms are weird. It's terrible, but it's the only way I can describe it."
She even explained that she had the hiccups at home one morning, which she said she has since learned "is the most missed symptom" in women having a stroke.
"You won't hear about it, but when I Googled it, it was the first thing that came up," she said. "Then, when I had gotten up to go to the restroom, I had a glass of water next to the sink. I was trying to get a glass of water and the movement wouldn't happen. I was telling my hand, but my hand wasn't listening to my brain."
Despite the scare, Denise has a positive outlook on the experience, even calling it a "gift" from God.
"Although I had this health scare, I always say it was probably the best thing that happened to me," she said. "I feel like it was a gift, it was a gift from the Lord. I don't think most people say that about something but it cause me to really be still."
