Billie Eilish and James Cameron were an unexpected professional duo when they teamed up for her new concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), but whose idea was it?
The "Birds of a Feather" singer spoke with People at the Los Angeles premiere of the film on Wednesday (May 6) where she explained the film's concept — which she called "an insane idea" — was dreamt up by the Avatar director who in turn reached out the Eilish's mother, Maggie Baird.
"[He] wrote an email to my mom because his wife is friends with my mom, or they had worked together," she said. "He literally had the full idea ready. He was like, 'Why hasn't anybody filmed Billie's concert in 3D? Can we? Can I?'"
She added, "Where did that come from, how did he think of it? I have no idea, but thank God he did. That's the story. We got on the phone and we made it happen."
It apparently didn't take much convincing to get Eilish on board, either. As soon as the "Bad Guy" hitmaker heard about Cameron's ask, she was immediately down with the idea.
"Oh, my God, I didn't even hesitate," she said. "Are you kidding."
Both Eilish and Cameron, who co-directed the film, spoke on their positive experiences working together, with Eilish praising his "ambition and work ethic" and Cameron lifting up her creative vision.
"Watching him in action is really inspiring because he has so much energy and is just ready to do whatever it takes to get the shot," she said, and Cameron added, "What you have to realize with Billie is she knows exactly what she's doing as an artist. I shot it, but she created the show. So as my co-director, she'd already done so much of the work before I even showed up."
Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) arrived to theaters May 8.
