Sandra Bullock has a long list of unforgettable performances in her catalog, from FBI agent turned beauty queen in Miss Congeniality to one half of an iconic sister duo with a witchy secret in Practical Magic, but there is one film she made that she considers the "most meaningful" because of how it reflected her real life.
In a recent coversation with her friend Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock, 62, explained why she connected with her character Dr. Ryan Stone in the 2013 sci-fi thriller Gravity. In the film, the astronaut finds herself floating through space alone desparately fighting her way back down to Earth.
"The one film that was the most meaningful to me, because it was paraelleling where I was, was Gravity," she said.
At the time of filming in 2011, Bullock was privately navigating a difficult time in her personal life. In January 2010, she had adopted her son Louis, then 3 years old, and in March of that year, she learned her then-husband of nearly five years Jesse James had been cheating on her, per People. They finalized their divorce in June 2010.
"It was during a really dark time in my life. I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it," she said, adding of filming, "Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking."
Bullock went on to adopt her daughter Laila, now 13, in 2015 and find love again with her late partner Bryan Randall, who passed away in 2023.
